Metropolis: The Classic in the First British Edition

Director Fritz Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou collaborated on the screenplay of this science fiction classic in 1924. Von Harbou adapted their work to novel form in 1926, when it was released in Germany only. One year later, the first British edition was published and the team released their ground-breaking film.

The striking dustjacket artwork by Aubrey Hammond emulates the extraordinary Art Deco aesthetic of the film, and is a stunning example of the type of art that would come to be known among science fiction fans as "Raygun Gothic."

Special Collections' copy, in the Chater Science Fiction Collection, joins six others held in institutions in the United States, and can be found in the PAC at
